I co-host the Stanmore external fixation course, and teach on several Ilizarov basic and advanced courses.
I convened the first UK deformity correction course, and have hosted the British Limb Reconstruction Society annual meeting.
I regularly talk at National and International trauma courses as well as ‘in-house’ teaching to medical staff and Professions Allied to Medicine.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
My general surgery posts exposed me to a wide variety of general surgical techniques, both elective and emergency. I have worked in units specialising in cardiothoracic, vascular and plastic surgery, all of which have proved useful in my preferred career of trauma management.
Working at the Royal London Hospital familiarised me with the acute and later management of poly-traumatised patients according to Advanced Trauma Life Support principles. This is a major London teaching hospital and the operating base of the London-wide Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. It is in this field that I specialised i.e. the setting up and running of an effective trauma system which requires continual supervision and refining by someone interested in this field. To this end I undertook a three month period of fellowship training in an AO clinic in Bochum, Germany from January to March 1997 where I honed my trauma management skills.
Since being appointed consultant I developed my specialist interest in trauma surgery, both acutely and the later corrective management. My particular fields of interest include multiple injuries and the use of Ilizarov external fixators in acute trauma management, as well as tertiary referred complex orthopaedic trauma. I have particular expertise in managing the complications of fractures, i.e. non-union and limb deformity.
As part of the wider management of trauma, I also have an extensive practice in Sports Injuries, particularly with regard to surgery of the knee and ankle, and have treated athletes at all levels, from Premiership footballers to ‘weekend warriors.’
I am a qualified Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor and teach regularly at national and international trauma meetings, and at Sports Medicine meetings.
Unfortunately, after several years of championing better management of trauma at Bart’s and the London, I realized that my particular interests in non-union and deformity management were not seen as ‘profitable’ in the financially stretched NHS, and attempts to improve the quality of trauma care seemed to be constantly undermined by short-sighted cost cutting measures.
Having tried for 15 years to build a sustainable system, I realized I could deliver a higher quality of care to those suffering from the complications of trauma such as non-union and deformity outside the NHS, and so in December 2011 resigned from Bart’s and The London
Since September 2012 I have been Consultant in Limb Reconstruction Surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital undertaking complex limb reconstruction surgery for nonunion, infection and deformity.
